More Information

::Public Citizen.org::

Public Citizen fundamentally opposes the use of ionizing radiation as a "treatment" for food. Irradiation destroys vitamins and other nutrients, forms chemicals known or suspected to cause cancer and birth defects, and masks unhygienic food production practices. Instead of this shortsighted quick-fix, we are encouraging the food industry and government regulators to institute comprehensive solutions in response to food safety challenges.

::FoE Australia Anti-Nuclear Campaign::

The Anti-Nuclear campaign opposes all aspects of the nuclear cycle. Active campaigns currently include

* Existing uranium mines Ranger (NT), Beverley and Olympic Dam (SA) and
proposed uranium mines Jabiluka (NT) and Honeymoon (SA).
* The transport and dumping of nuclear waste (National Radioactive Waste Dump near Woomera and National Store for Intermediate Nuclear Waste)
* Plans for a new nuclear reactor in Sydney (Lucas Heights).
* The irradiation plant at Narangba in SE QLD and the nationwide use of food irradiation.

::Organic Consumers Society (US)::

::The Food Commission::

Headlines about the safety of genetically modified food, dangerous toxins or chemicals in our food are hard to swallow. Faced with reports like these, where can you go for the truth? The Food Commission is the UK's leading independent watchdog on food issues. We have been campaigning for safer, healthier food for over ten years.

::Food Standards Australia New Zealand::

Food Standards Australia New Zealand (formerly ANZFA) protects the health and safety of the people in Australia and New Zealand by maintaining a safe food supply. We are a bi-national independent statutory authority that develops food standards for composition, labelling and contaminants, including microbiological limits, that apply to all foods produced or imported for sale in Australia and New Zealand. Food Standards Australia New Zealand works in partnership with Australia’s Commonwealth, State and Territory governments and the New Zealand Government. We also seek to engage industry, consumers and public health professionals in our work.

::Food and Agriculture Organisation & the International Atomic Energy Agency::

A sub-Programme of the FAO in conjunction withthe International Atomic Energy Agency caims it: assists national food and consumer protection authorities to implement Codex Standards for food irradiation and for food contaminants by using nuclear and related biotechnological analytical methods. It promotes the objective of sustainable food security by supporting countries in their efforts to improve food availability, quality and safety for domestic consumption and to satisfy requirements of the World Trade Organization’s Agreement on Sanitary and Phytosanitary SPS) Measures relating to trade in food and agricultural commodities.
